واژهی Folio در اصل به شیوهای قدیمی در چاپ کتاب اشاره دارد: یک ورق بزرگ کاغذ را فقط یک بار از وسط تا میکردند و از آن چهار صفحه به دست میآمد. کتابهایی که با این روش ساخته میشدند، بزرگ، گرانقیمت و رسمی بودند و معمولاً برای آثار مهم تاریخی، دینی یا ادبی به کار میرفتند. بعدها «فولیو» به معنای یک برگ، دفتر، مجلد یا مجموعهای از آثار نیز استفاده شد.
فولیوی نخست یا First Folio نام رایج نخستین مجموعه چاپشده از نمایشنامههای ویلیام شکسپیر است که در سال ۱۶۲۳، یعنی هفت سال پس از مرگ او، منتشر شد. نام کامل آن تقریباً چنین بود:
کمدیها، تاریخها و تراژدیهای آقای ویلیام شکسپیر
بنابراین: Folio نام قالب و اندازهی کتاب است. و First Folio یعنی نخستین مجموعهی آثار نمایشی شکسپیر که در قالب فولیو چاپ شد.
